What is Fiber Optic Patch Cord?
Fiber optic patch cord refers to the connecting cables used to connect fiber optic equipment in fiber optic communication systems. It is composed of fiber optic cable and fiber connector that fixed at both ends of optical cable, has been widely used in various fields such as fiber optic communication systems, fiber optic access networks, fiber optic data transmission, CATV, and local area networks.
Fiber Optic Patch Cable Types
There are different types of fiber optic patch cord according to different standards. In this post, Gcabling will briefly introduce several mainstream fiber optic patch cables types in the market.
By Fiber Connector Type
SC/LC/FC/ST/MPO/MU/MT-RJ/E2000/DIN Fiber Patch Cord
Fiber optic patch cords can be classified according to the fiber connector types, with the most common and mainstream being SC fiber optic patch cable, LC fiber optic patch cord, FC fiber patch cord, ST fiber patch cable, as well as MPO fiber patch cable, MU fiber patch cord, MT-RJ fiber optic patch cable, E2000 fiber optic patch cord, etc.
Though these different types of fiber optic patch cords have similar components (composed of fiber optic connectors and optical cables) and the same functions, there are differences in application scenarios due to the different characteristics and performance of optical connectors.
By Optical Fiber Type
Single Mode/Multimode Fiber Optic Patch Cable
According to the types of optical fibers, fiber patch cords can be divided into single mode fiber optic patch cables and multimode fiber optic patch cables.
The outer sheath of single mode fiber optic patch cord is usually yellow, with small fiber core diameter and dispersion, allowing only one mode of transmission, which can achieve lower attenuation and is suitable for long-distance communication.
The outer sheath color of multimode fiber optic patch cord can be divided into multiple colors, OM1 and OM2 are orange, OM3 is aqua, OM4 is violet, and OM5 is lime green. Multimode fiber has a large core diameter and dispersion, high bandwidth, and allows for hundreds of modes of transmission, making multimode fiber patch cable more widely used for short distance data transmission.
By Interface Working Mode
Simplex/Duplex Fiber Patch Cable
Fiber optic patch cables can be divided into simplex and duplex fiber optic patch cords according to the working mode of the interface.
Simplex fiber patch cable can only transmit information in one direction, with one end being the transmitter and the other end being the receiver. It is not reversible and is suitable for applications with unidirectional transmission.
Duplex fiber optic patch cord has two connectors at both ends for bidirectional information transmission, receiving data while sending it, and is usually used in applications that require bidirectional transmission.
By Application Environment
Outdoor/Indoor/ Drop Fiber Optic Patch Cord
According to the different application environments, optical fiber patch cables can be divided into outdoor fiber optic patch cable, indoor fiber patch cable, drop patch cord, etc.
Outdoor fiber optic patch cable, due to its outdoor application, needs to better resist the influence of external forces and natural factors on optical fibers, and has some mechanical and environmental characteristics such as pressure resistance, corrosion resistance, and tensile strength. Common structures of outdoor fiber optic patch cords include armor, waterproof connectors, self-supporting and reinforcement (FRP).
Indoor fiber patch cables are fiber optic jumper cables used in indoor environments, which have poor water resistance and weather resistance, cannot be directly exposed to outdoor environments.
Drop fiber patch cord can use metal or non-metal structures, is suitable for entering households in buildings through pipelines or exposed cables.
Features of Fiber Patch Cord
- Low insertion loss
- High return loss
- High bandwidth
- Strong anti-interference ability
