What is Rack PDU?
PDU (Power Distribution Unit) is a device that manages and distributes power for network devices installed in cabinets. It has various series specifications with different functions, installation methods, and combinations of plugs and sockets. PDUs are typically installed in racks, network cabinets, or data centers, providing suitable rack mounted power distribution solutions for different power environments.
Types of Rack PDU
According to different functions, PDUs can be divided into basic PDU and intelligent PDU.
Basic PDU
Basic PDU is the simplest type, mainly used for power distribution, without remote monitoring and control functions. It usually has fixed output sockets and switches for transmitting power to connected devices.Feature:
1) Cost effectiveness, lower costs 2) Easy to use and deployApplication:
Small office or home environment, low demand devices, temporary or short-term scenariosIntelligent PDU
Intelligent PDU is a power distribution device with advanced functions and intelligent management capabilities. In addition to basic power supply functions, it can also monitor parameters such as current, voltage, power and energy consumption in real-time, and support remote control of socket switches and power distribution through the network, providing functions such as remote restart, timing switch, and fault alarm.
Feature:
1) Remote monitoring and control, advanced management functions
2) Flexible configuration, energy management and optimization
Application:
Data center and server room, IT equipment cabinet, large enterprises and organizations, energy management projects
Common types of smart PDUs include:
- Metered PDU
- Monitored PDU
- Switched PDU
- Automatic Transfer Switch PDU
- Hot Swap PDU
- Dual Circuit PDU
Metered PDU
Metered power distribution unit has power parameter monitoring function, which can monitor parameters such as current, voltage, power and energy consumption in real-time, and display and record power parameters through local display or integration with other monitoring systems.
Monitored PDU
Monitored PDU has added remote monitoring function on top of the metered PDU. In addition to being able to monitor power parameters in real-time, it can also remotely monitor power parameters through network interfaces or management software, and provide alarm notifications and reports.
Switched PDU
Switched power distribution unit has the ability to remotely control socket switches. Administrators can remotely control the switch status of sockets through network interfaces or management software, achieving remote device restart, timed switching, and power distribution.
Automatic Transfer Switch PDU
ATS PDU has redundant power supply and automatic transfer function. It can automatically switch to a backup power supply in the event of a main power failure to ensure continuous power supply to the equipment. This type of PDU is usually used in application scenarios that require high power reliability.
Hot Swap PDU
Hot swap PDUs allow for the replacement or addition of plugins without interrupting power supply. This means that administrators can add or replace devices during operation without the need to power down the entire PDU.
Dual Circuit PDU
Dual circuit PDU has two independent power circuits, which can provide redundant power supply for the equipment. Each circuit has independent input power and output sockets to provide higher power reliability.
Functions of Power Distribution Unit
Power Distribution
PDU can distribute input power to multiple devices and provide power connections through output sockets, ensuring that each device receives appropriate power supply.
Power Management
PDU has the functions of monitoring, measuring, and managing electricity. It can monitor parameters such as current, voltage, power, and energy consumption in real-time, helping administrators understand the power usage of devices and carry out energy management and optimization.
Remote Control
Some PDUs have remote monitoring and control functions, which can remotely manage and control the power status of devices through the network, achieve remote restart, timing switch, and other functions, improve the flexibility and efficiency of device management.
Fault Alarm
PDU can monitor power parameters and trigger an alarm in abnormal situations, allowing administrators to promptly detect and handle power issues.
Safety Protection
PDUs typically have functions such as overload protection, short circuit protection, and overvoltage protection, which can protect equipment from damage caused by power issues.
Installation Method of Rack Mounted PDU
The standard 19 inch PDU can be installed horizontally or vertically.
Horizontal PDU
It refers to installing the PDU in a horizontal position on the rack, with the socket of the PDU usually facing towards the outside of the rack. It is suitable for situations that require convenient power cord connection and management outside the rack.
Vertical PDU
It refer to installing the PDU in a vertical position on the rack, with the socket of the PDU usually facing towards the inside of the rack. It is suitable for situations where power cord connections and management need to be made inside the rack.
