What is Network Cable?

A network cable is a physical connection medium used to transmit data and information within a network, usually made of metal or glass. It is a cable used to connect computers and other network devices, and connect these devices to the local network.

Network Cable Types

Network cables can be divided into several types according to their structure, transmission media, etc. Here are three main networking cable types:

Twisted Pair Cable

Twisted pair network cables, also known as Ethernet cables, are a common type of network cable that twists two metal wires with insulation protection layer together. Currently, the most common twisted pair network cable is made of 4 pairs of 8 wires twisted together.

Ethernet cables can be divided into CAT1, CAT2, CAT3, CAT4, CAT5, CAT5E, CAT6, CAT6A, CAT7, CAT7A, CAT8 based on different specifications and performance levels. They differ in transmission rate, frequency, anti-interference ability, and are suitable for different application scenarios. In addition, according to whether the twisted pair contains a shielding layer, it can be divided into UTP (unshielded twisted pair) cables and STP (shielded twisted pair) cables.

Fiber Optic Cable

Fiber optic cables use optical fibers as transmission media, utilizing optical pulses to transmit information and data. It is usually composed of three parts: fiber core, strength member, and outer sheath, and has the advantages of long transmission distance, fast transmission speed, and strong anti-interference ability.

There are many classification methods for optical cables, according to different standards, there are different classifications:

  1. According to the type of optical fiber: single mode fiber optic cable and multimode fiber optic cable
  2. According to the usage environment: indoor fiber optic cable, drop cable, outdoor fiber optic cable
  3. According to the laying method: aerial fiber optic cable, direct buried fiber optic cable, duct fiber optic cable, underwater fiber optic cable, etc.

Coaxial Cable

Coaxial cables are a commonly used transmission medium composed of inner conductor, insulator, metallic shield (outer conductor), and sheath, used for transmitting low loss high-frequency electrical signals.

Different types of coaxial cables have differences in electrical characteristics, frequency range, and application fields, among which some coaxial cables can be used for computer networks, namely RG-6, RG-8, RG-58, and RG-59 coaxial cables.
