What is Fiber Optic Drop Cable?

Fiber drop cable is the basic fiber optic cable that is used to connect the terminal of a distribution cable to a customer’s premises, supporting signal transmission from outdoor to indoor.

Fiber optic drop cables have the advantages of small outer diameter, light weight, low cost, and convenient construction, have been widely used in FTTH (fiber to the home) network cabling.

At present, there are two common types of drop cable structure on the market: flat butterfly and round.

Structures of Fiber Drop Cable

Optical Fiber

Optical fiber is the core component of fiber optic cables, responsible for the transmission of optical signals. According to the market and customer needs, G652D, G657A1, G657A2, is mainly required on the current market. If multi-mode is required, can also be customized.

Reinforcement

When using fibre drop cables for long-distance horizontal or vertical cabling, the tensile strength of the drop cable must be considered. At present, the reinforcement components on the market are mainly divided into two types: metal reinforcement and FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastics).

Metal reinforcement: Strong tensile strength, slightly lower cost. But need to pay attention to the conductivity of lightning strikes on rainy days.

FRP: Low tension strength, slightly higher cost. Excellent lightning protection performance.

Self-supporting Member

Self-supporting figure 8 flat drop cable has an additional 1 self-supporting steel wire compared to ordinary flat drop cable, which has stronger tensile performance. It can be laid overhead outdoors and then enter to the indoor wiring.

Outer Jacket

Drop cables are mainly used from outdoors to indoors, where they are exposed to sunlight and rain. In addition, cables may pass through buildings and require good flame retardant performance. Therefore, the outer jacket of optical drop cable will be made of anti-UV and flame-retardant LSZH material.
